Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the oldest recorded forms of treatment, having been used as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 3,000 years. This traditional form of acupuncture is understood in terms of Qi (energy) that flows around the body in channels (meridians). Since then, a Western approach to acupuncture has developed that is explained by stimulation of nerves that either block pain from reaching the brain, or cause the brain to release pain-relieving chemicals (endorphins). Introducing a needle also improves the blood supply to an injured area and so promotes healing. Acupuncture is also very effective for treating muscles with chronic spasm by deactivating myofascial trigger points.
Blending acupuncture with other physiotherapeutic techniques guarantees that our clients receive the best of both Eastern and Western medicine. Acupuncture is commonly used to treat back and neck pain, joint pain, tennis /golfers elbow, Achilles tendonitis and myofascial trigger points.
At Murphy Physiotherapy we also use Electroacupuncture. This technique affords stronger stimulation of the needles by connecting them to a TENS-like piece of equipment. This deeper stimulation can produce quicker or better results.
